Wyoming Steelers Player

BASIN, WYOMING - Homeless cats and dogs in Northwest Wyoming owe a lot to a Pittsburgh Steelers' Player.

Defensive End Brett Keisel is donating his autographed Super Bowl memorabilia to an animal shelter there. A mewing white kitten isn’t happy, but she is safe and warm. If it weren’t for the Felines and Friends shelter, in Basin, she could be out in the cold, where it's very cold.

The President of a shelter named Felines and Friends, Barbara Greene said without the shelter, “Then they’re out there making tons of babies, and getting sick and passing on disease, and starving to death. It’s really sad.”

Greene started the shelter in her home. She’s asking people to adopt the animals, and help pay to have them neutered. She got a big helping hand from a big man in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive End Brett Keisel offered autographed items from Super Bowl 43 for an internet auction benefiting Felines and Friends.

Barbara described the items, “A terrible towel, a DVD, a hat, and a T-Shirt, and they’re all on eBay” But why would a Superbowl star help a tiny animal shelter in the tiny town of Basin? Keisel is Greene’s nephew.

Steeler's number 99 graduated from high school in Greybull in 1997. Ten years later, he earned his first Superbowl ring. Now he's got two.

Keisel's best friend, Michael McGuire explained why the big man on the field has a soft heart for animals, “They’ve got two dogs and he treats them like they were his kids. He really loves animals.”

McGuire played with Keisel at Greybull High. He says Keisel brings his dogs back home in the summer, and a quarterback followed him home once. McGuire was there, “A couple of years ago, Ben came with him, so we did some camping up on the mountain, and of course, had the dogs with us.”

McGuire says Keisel often does charity work for animals. He said, “They’ve done some dog walks and things like that out in the Pittsburgh area.”

Greene hopes the auction of Keisel’s items will help pay for the discounted vet services: $100 for a spay, $50 for a neuter. But, if she could have one wish for Christmas, it would be for charity at home.

She wished, “That every person that is watching this will spay and neuter their pets.”

The auction can be found on eBay by searching on Brett Keisel. His auction closes Thursday, December 17th.
