BILLINGS - The Thanksgiving holiday is wrapping up with travelers returning to their desired destinations.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year. The triple a travel agency predicts 38.4 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more away from home this week.

Airports are always busy on the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but the Bureau of Transportation said Thanksgiving Day is actually the most traveled say of the holiday weekend. They said during the 6-day Thanksgiving travel period, the number of long-distance travel increased by 54%.

Nearly all of that travel, about 91%, is done in a personal vehicle. Statistics show that only 5%-to-6% of holiday trips are spent in the air, while 2%-to-3% of people travel by bus, train, ship, or other modes.

Many people are concerned about getting to their final destination on Thanksgiving weekend, but one Greyhound bus traveler says the journey is fun too.

"I say it's been pretty cool for my first bus trip. I'm going back to Job Corp in Anaconda and I have a 7-hour and 5 minute layover and it's almost over," said traveler Sam White.

At the Billings bus station, some holiday travelers had long layovers as they tried to get back to see their families.

"I had a 7 hour layover. I'm going to Tacoma and I was down here visiting family for Thanksgiving. I'm heading back to see my beautiful wife and four kids," said Lamont Jones. Lamont still has a long journey ahead with eleven stops until he sees his family, but says he enjoyed his stay.

The statistics also show that people traveling by air, train or bus usually leave on Wednesday and return on Sunday.
