BILLINGS - A Montana woman whose daughter was murdered nearly three decades ago was honored Friday night as this year's recipient of the Jeanette Rankin Peace Award.

The Institute for Peace Studies at Rocky Mountain College selected Marietta Lane of Three Forks for the honor.

Lane was chosen for her work against capital punishment as well as her efforts with the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. Lane forgave the man who killed her 7-year-old daughter Susie in 1973 and has been a vocal opponent of the death penalty for the past 36 years.

"Ever since high school when I first read about Jeanette Rankin, she's always been one of my heroines because she lived her life with courage and integrity and to receive this award is humbling," said Lane.

In addition to honoring Lane, the Institute for Peace Studies also presented peace essay awards to regional high school and college students.
