BILLINGS - MSU-Billings' annual poll finds a majority of Montanans do not approve of President Obama.

The statewide survey showed 53% disapprove of the president's job performance, while 37% said he's doing a good job.

As with Senator Baucus researchers believe the healthcare debate has contributed to those low ratings. They said 74% of Montanans think passage of a health care bill would negatively affect care, while the remaining 26% said it would improve care.

However, researchers said they're surprised that responses were unaffected by variables such as age, education, and gender. They said the results show the biggest factor is party line politics.

The poll has been compiled since 1989, and officials said time lends credibility to the study. "We have enough of a history that we feel fairly confident in the conclusions that we draw," said Dan Lennon, survey co-director, and an assistant professor in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
