Gitmo Detainees

HARDIN - The Obama administration is looking to move Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the United States. The Associated Press reports that federal officials consideration three detention centers including the Hardin Jail, but the focus has been on a jail near Chicago.

The "Thomson Correctional Center" is a maximum-security prison with 1,600 cells. The deal could pump a billion dollars into the local economy. Al Peterson with Two Rivers Authority said some federal officials have contacted them about using the Hardin jail, but he doesn't think the deal will pan out.

"In my own personal opinion, I don't think Gitmo detainees will ever be on American soil in a prison, but who knows," Peterson said. "I was wrong before, I may be wrong again."

Peterson said they are still looking for other people who could bring prisoners to the Hardin jail.
