New Street Lights

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - The Billings area made a significant investment to help create a brighter commute for drivers on Billings's south side.

Crews started installing 33 LED lights this week on poles along King Avenue East. City officials say the project is the first in the state and is a test run for future projects around Billings. Crews say the project brings more than just an environmental benefit to the community.

"I think the lights do a lot of things for us. They certainly save on energy costs, maintenance costs, and the light that comes out of them is more of a white light compared to the high pressure sodium ones which are more of a yellow light," said city worker Vern Heisler.

The company installing the lights recently finished a similar project involving more than 10,000 LED lights around New York City.
