Violent Workplace

BILLINGS - Two mass shootings in Orlando, Florida, and on a military base in Texas have many asking how to identify a violent employee in the workplace.

Experts say it's difficult to predict if or when someone could turn violent, but there are common traits such as people who don't work well with others, someone who has instability in their life, or someone who holds grudges. Experts say organizations need to take several steps to reduce the risk of violence.

"They need people that are trained to interview, they need to have employees that are not afraid to tell their concerns to their managers, and they need their needs to be a clear pathway of what people can do to feel safe," said Psychologist Dr. Bruce Chessen.

A study by the U.S. Department of Labor found workplace violence deaths have gone down from more than 1,000 in 1995 to 571 in 2008.
