Church Abuse

BILLINGS - The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests are in Billings this week reaching out to victims in the area.

The group says a five-state region of the Jesuits sought bankruptcy protection to avoid more than 300 child sex abuse trials and as a condition of the bankruptcy, victims have until November 30th to file a claim to collect damages.

To raise awareness the SNAP members say they'll try to post ads in church bulletins and hang flyers inside of churches.

"The sign is in plain English," said Joelle Casteix, SNAP Regional Director. "It says 'were you hurt?' because someone wont read a legal notice and it has the numbers of survivors that they can talk to. It's much easier to pick up the phone and talk to another survivor than it is to pick up the phone and call a bankruptcy attorney for the Jesuits."

Officials from the Catholic Diocese of Great Falls-Billings say they are also trying to reach out and spread the word before the deadline.
