KULR-8 Ghost

BILLINGS - This is the time of year when people across the nation are checking out ghost stories and haunted buildings. We here at KULR-8 have one of our own ghost stories.

As the tale goes, the assistant chief engineer was trying to fix the transmitter one night and touched something he shouldn't have. He was electrocuted and reportedly stuck around the old KULR-8 building that was located on Sacrifice Cliff.

"It was always an adventure trying to get up there in the winter," said Linda Shandy, a Traffic Manager at KULR-8 who started working as a camera operator and was worked her way up through the KULR-8 ranks.

Arlen Blumhagen is a director for KULR-8 and started in the 1970s as master control operator. He said the old building has some quirks. "When it rained we had 30-to-40 garbage cans we would be out to catch the rain," he said.

Shandy agreed, saying, "It was always a spooky little place even in the daytime." But it was at night when the really spooky things started to happen. Blumhagen who worked nights was warned about the ghost in his first few days on the job.

"I was skeptical as anyone would be," he said. But night after night he saw things he couldn't dismiss. The control room was on the second floor and there was a creaky door at the bottom the stairs.

"Almost every night at some point in the evening you would hear the door open and clearly hear footsteps," Blumhagen said. "But you'd run around and there'd be no one there." He said equipment would fail for no reason and then start working again.

"There were a couple of times I'd say, 'Come on ghost. I've got work to do,' and it'd start working again," Blumhagen said.

But it was one night when Blumhagen was alone in the building that he became a true believer. He heard the door and the footsteps and said, "Hey ghost. How's it going?" He heard the ghost answered him by advancing the slide projector in the other room. The only switch to operate that switch was sitting right in front of Blumhagen. "I heard a slide drum advance," he said. "That's when I knew."

Everyone who did experience this spirit said he was rather nice and never tried to scare anyone.

So many places in Billings are haunted. I worked for years at the old 17 Club and we had 3 guys that hung around after they should have left. Never fear the dead, my grandmother always said, its the living that will hurt you.
