BILLINGS - House fires and carbon monoxide poisoning are becoming more common this time of year. The Billings Fire Department says before you switch on the heat, there are some tips you should know.

Carbon monoxide, a tasteless, odorless gas, can come from malfunctioning home appliances such as furnaces and stoves. Fire officials say a carbon monoxide detector is the best defense.

Officials also say its a good idea to have chimneys and stoves regularly cleaned and to create a family escape plan in case of fire.

"Every year a number of people lose their life looking for children back in a home that are already out," said Chief Paul Dextras.

Dextras says the fire department is happy to inspect homes and answer any questions regarding furnaces and stoves.
