BILLINGS - Montana's Little Shell Tribe is now turning to congress in its fight for federal recognition.

Earlier this week the Bureau of Indian Affairs turned down the tribe's 30-year-old request for federal recognition. Tribal leaders say the decision wasn't completely unexpected and will look for acknowledgment through Senators Jon Tester and Max Baucus who introduced legislation earlier this week to override the decision.

"The legislative process isn't a sure thing either," said Tribe President John Sinclair. "There's a lot of work to do there and we have to make sure that we work as hard as we can so they'll work as hard as they can."

The 4,300 members of the Little Shell Tribe submitted their formal recognition petition in 1978. The tribe would be eligible for federal housing grants and other assistance if it meets approval.

It would be nice if the recognized tribes would recognize their members when their ancestors were too scared to register and yet they can prove the are Indians.
