Sugar Beets

BILLINGS - Montana sugar beet farmers, said harvest is looking a lot better than it did a couple weeks ago. The early, cold temperatures in October left growers concerned, but they said they have made significant progress over the last four days.

Sidney Sugars said about 75% of their crop has been harvested, but they still have a ways to go. "We've got a little over 200, 000 tons to get in before we can call harvest complete. We're just hoping now that the rain stays away, and it doesn't freeze too hard. We should be able to handle it. We had four or five days of pretty good harvest and before that it was pretty hit or miss," said General Manager of Sidney Sugar, Steven Sing.

Besides the weather, another complication is that Western Sugar has exceeded the amount of beets it can receive. The company reached an agreement with Wyoming Sugar to process the 21,000 tons that are still left. Crews expect to be done with harvest in less than two weeks.

In two weeks we will still have most of the beets in the ground that were in the ground when the freeze hit. Get the story straight, KULR-8.
