Yellowstone Snowmobile Cutbacks

BILLINGS - The number of snowmobiles allowed into Yellowstone National Park this winter could be cut in half.

Wyoming officials are pursuing legal action to stop the National Park Service's new snowmobile restrictions.

Three hundred eighteen snowmobiles will be allowed in the park each day, which is about a 50% decrease from last year's limit.

Wyoming officials argue new rules will have a negative economic impact on the area.

National Park Service officials said cutting back was a way of ensuring winter access to the park. "This is a number that we felt we could support with our science and would allow us to move forward under an environmental assessment,” said Yellowstone Spokesperson Al Nash.

Motorized over-snow travel will remain open across Sylvan Pass and East Entrance road.

The new rules govern snowmobile use through next winter while officials work on a permanent plan.
