BILLINGS - You could be the rightful owner of $25 or maybe $2,500 and not even know it.
The Montana Department of Revenue released its list of names of people who are the owners of unclaimed personal property. Common types of unclaimed property include: bank accounts, safety deposit box contents, stocks, mutual funds, uncashed checks and wages, insurance policies, trust funds, utility deposits and escrow accounts.
State officials said from June of 2008 to July of this year, they had more than $5-million turned over to them in unclaimed property. To claim your money you can call the state revenue department toll free at 1-866-859-2254.
Notices for unclaimed refunds from the Internal Revenue Service are expected to come out in October. The IRS will release a list of names and addresses and it is up to the individual to follow up.
To tax year 2007, more than 100,000 Montana residents left more than $600,000 dollars unclaimed. The average unclaimed refund was $723 dollars.
An IRS regional spokesperson said you have three years to claim your money before it's turned over to the U.S. Treasury Department. They said the tax money usually does not make it to its rightful owner due to an incorrect address or a post office mix up.
