BILLINGS - This week is suicide prevention week and to kick it off a few organizations gathered with the community Tuesday morning. Montana and Wyoming are among the top three states with the highest deaths by suicide.

The goal of the meeting was to focus on prevention and make sure those in the community are aware of the information and support available to them.

Don Wetzel with 'Planting Seeds of Hope' says the key is basic communication.

"Suicide is the other 's' word that nobody likes to talk about. It happens to everyone; it seems everyone I've talked to around Montana it's touched them in some way, sometimes they don't remember but somewhere down the line it has. Just getting people to talk about it and reaching out to help each other is a very critical issue."

There are a couple events taking place to aid in the fight against suicide. The first is a music and movie fundraiser Friday, September 11th from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Venture Theater. Tickets are $12 dollars.

Then on September 20th, the 'American Foundation for Suicide Prevention' is hosting the "Out of the Darkness" walk. Check in is at 1 p.m. and the walk starts from Veterans Park at 2 p.m. To register call (406) 322-8587.
