Carbon County Wind Turbine

BOYD- A little more than six months ago Carbon County resident Michael Kananen was one of many Beartooth Electric Co-Op customers experiencing the nearly 50% increase in rates.

With a $900 electric bill for one month, Kananen knew he needed to do something different. So rather than complaining, he decided to purchase a wind turbine. Kanenen hopes the turbine will allow him to replace the energy he was paying for, leaving him with virtually no electricity bills.

Kananen purchased the turbine after several months of research. Advanced Energy Technology Distributor, Andy Richards says the wind turbine Kanenen chose is great for this part of the country.

"With the turbulent winds that are in Montana, winds that are in Northern Montana and Wyoming the vertical axis is able to accept wind from multiple directions which results in a more productive wind turbine and increases your kilowatt per hour."

The vertical axis wind turbine stands a little over 30 ft. tall and will produce enough power to run Kananen's ranch with energy to spare. But the benefits don't just stop there. Richards says investing in alternative energy will save Kananen thousands of dollars in the long run.

"Basically you are paying the same amount per month as what you were paying for your power. But 3-5 years you're out from underneath that completley."

Richards says other benefits include leaving a positive impact on the environment. He says becoming self-sustainable and reducing your fossil fuel usage will result in a huge carbon foot print reduction. Something Richards says is really easy to do.

I have been looking at doing the same thing in ND. I would like to know if there has been an update to this story or if anyone knows how to get ahold of Mr Kananen? Thanks Mike

Great idea. This should inspire a lot of us to do something about the outrageous electric bills.
