MILES CITY -- There's a new type of home being built near Miles City that will cost its owner nothing to heat or cool.

Known as an Earthship, the self-sustaining residence is designed to utilize available local resources, such as energy from the sun. Consequently, the dwelling will offer its owners almost everything that a typical house does, minus the utility bill.

"To me, it makes sense -- a building that will basically take care of you and itself,” said Demian Larsen, Earthship builder.

Nearly every part of the Earthship is eco-friendly, including its major building component -- low-priced, dirt-filled automobile tires. Plus, the roof is formulated to catch water and channel it through filters for consumption, cleaning, and bathing.

And that’s not all -- the Earthship also makes its own food.

“There's a shallow indoor planter that will provide herbs, lettuces, and small gardens as well as deeper cells for small fruit trees, bananas, and avocados," said Larsen.

Although there are only a handful of Earthships throughout the world -- including the one being built here in the Treasure State -- builders expect many more people to make this type of abode their home sweet Earthship.

ummmmm on disability and wanting to build a house of tires hmmm sounds to me like your friend needs to be OFF disability its not EASY to build a tire house and someone on disability could NOT do it. MAYBE thats what they see too? ya think? duhhhh

My Friend is in appalac court about to loose his land and h0me to Grand Junction city and county commissioner! He is disabled and on Social Security Disability, with no legal help no money he has faught them for 6 years now we ned some helop!. He is ten days away from loosing all he has because he has 15,000 tires he needs to build all of his buildings and home. The city of Grand Junction wants to take his land and remove all he has done so far. wHY DO THEY WNT HIS LAND?
