Health Care Reform Protests

BILLINGS - As a national healthcare plan is taking shape in Washington, a local group rallied against reform Thursday night.

The group called Patients First says a government take over of health care could mean fewer choices, more taxes and even denied care for those who need it most.

The group claims patients will lose control over their own health care and choice of physician. They say it will take longer to receive care and taxpayers will pay for the government's plan.

"My particular concern is with senior citizens. Of course when the bureaucrats start rationing health care it's the oldest and the sickest and the frailest among us who go to the end of the line," said Lawrence Hunter with the Social Security Institute.

Speakers Thursday night said reform is needed but the answer is cutting out some of the middle men between patients and doctors, not adding more.

State Senators Roy Brown and Taylor Brown both spoke at the rally. The group was also gathering signatures at the meeting on a petition urging Congress to oppose legislation that gives the government control over health care and diminishes patient's choices.
