Firework Safety

BILLINGS - The 4th of July and fireworks go hand in hand, but the Billings Fire Department and fireworks vendors want to make sure safety comes first.

Fireworks have been a main staple for the 4th of July for decades, but with every snap, crackle, and pop comes the potential for injury. "They're explosives," said firework vendor Micah Lynch.

But that's not stopping people from buying fireworks by the dozen at the Lynch family firework tent on South Billings Boulevard. So this holiday weekend they're constantly reminding people about the danger associated with every bottle rocket or roman candle.

"A lot of people with just crazy stories of stupid things that they've done so we just want to make sure that that doesn't happen again or kids just don't go shooting things off at each other," said Lynch.

The same goes with emergency crews in Billings. Fire officials want to remind you this 4th of July if you are planning on setting some fireworks off make sure you're in sand or a gravel pit with no trees or grass around before lighting one off.

Other tips both groups pass along include always making sure you're a proper distance from the combustible and having a bucket of water or fire extinguisher around just in case something does happen. Although both groups will probably never see eye to eye on the pyrotechnics both also agree if someone can't handle the responsibility that goes with fireworks they shouldn't be using them in the first place.

To avoid fireworks-related mishaps officials have shut down Phipps Park and the Rims through the end of the holiday weekend.
