BILLINGS - Longtime Yellowstone County Sheriff Chuck Maxwell has died after a 3 year battle with cancer.

Maxwell had served as the county's sheriff since 1993. Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department officials say he had served in law enforcement for more than 45 years and had been apart of the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department for more than 30.

A few years ago Maxwell told the public he was battling leukemia.

Maxwell's term was set to run through December of 2010.

Undersheriff Jay Bell says the funeral for Maxwell will be held this Wednesday at the Metra Park Expo Center. The ceremony will be open to the public.

Following the service there will be a procession leading to the Mountview Cemetery in Billings. The memorial service at MetraPark will begin at 2:00 pm, county officials say the ceremony will be open to the public.
