Sutton's Warns Employees

BILLINGS - A heavy blow was dealt to about 90 Billings workers Wednesday when Sutton's Sportswear told its employees the business will likely close by the end of the month.
Sutton's has been fighting to stay above water for the past year. In May of 2008, they laid off 47 employees, citing tough economic times. Three months later, they shifted staff schedules to a four-day work week to cut back on operational costs.
Since 1981, the company has designed and made shirts, and hats for sports teams, corporations and resorts. Sutton's changed ownership in 2007.
President Mark Heydon said it is a sad time for the company and its employees, some of whom have been with the company since its start. Heydon said they do have three investors who may be willing to buy the company, but if that does not happen, Sutton's will close its doors June 30th.

With layoffs looming, Job Service officials prepare for a large number of Sutton's Sportswear employees to flood their office.

Job Service staff is ready to accommodate the employees when they are let go. Officials say its crucial for anyone who is recently laid off to apply for unemployment benefits and others services immediately.

"You pay for those services, you've been working, you've been paying your taxes and now if you need those services they're there and available. It's important to get in touch with your local Job Service," said Job Service Regional Director Tom Frisby.

This isn't the first time job service has dealt with an influx of workers laid off by a large company. Last fall, Stillwater Mining Company let go hundreds of employees.
