Prisoners Take Up Challenge

BILLINGS - After seizing hundreds of dogs from a Ballantine dog breeder, Yellowstone County authorities knew they had a huge task of taking care of the animals, not to mention the puppies that were yet to be born. But a special group of women were up to the challenge.

Inmates with the Montana Women's Prison started working with the dogs several months ago.

"We're caring for the dogs and we're also doing something positive which is probably something a lot of us haven't done for some time," said Kelle Gerard, an inmate in the Prison Paws for Humanities program.

The program has been offered at the prison for more than 4 years.
