Dangerous Flood Season

BILLINGS - Nearly 100 lives are lost every year because of flooding. This week, the National Weather Service wants to call attention to those numbers and the dangers surrounding floods.

Spring is peak flood season and weather experts say people should become cautious as more snow melts, and heavy rainstorms hit. They report minor incidents caused by ice jams so far this year, along Montana's rivers and waterways. Experts say flooding can be dangerous for those living in both rural and urban areas.

"The main thing with flooding is always to know that you should never try to drive over a flooded road because you don't know what's underneath, or if the road has been washed out. That's how a lot of people get in trouble," says Brian Tesar, with the National Weather Service in Billings.

FEMA Officials remind homeowners about flood insurance for their homes. They say many people don't know the details of their home insurance and should double check their policy to make sure it includes floods.
