Stimulus Signing

BILLINGS - The stimulus package survived despite the nearly unanimous opposition of Republicans.

Montana's congressional delegation is also at odds. Democrats Max Baucus and Jon Tester say quick action was needed. But, Republican Denny Rehberg says congress moved too quickly on a plan that's too expensive.

Each responded to the bill's passage.

Rehberg: "I'll do anything I can to make this work. At the same time we have to be realistic. We're piling so much debt up on ourselves and future generations that we make ourselves vulnerable both economically and from an international standpoint."

Tester: "Our debt has doubled in the last 7, 8 years. And, if you don't have an economy that has some momentum behind it, you'll never pay that debt off. So, we had to figure out ways to get the economy jump-started. The patient is in critical condition. We had to stop the bleeding. Hopefully, this stops the bleeding."

Baucus: "Every dollar spent is a dollar that stimulates the economy. That helps prevent people from getting laid off from their jobs, businesses don't have to lay off employees. The key is to spend the dollars efficiently, wisely and carefully."

So what does the Stimulus bill mean for Montana? Of the $787-billion, Montana will see nearly $626-million dollars.

The plan is expected to create or save more than 11,000 jobs. About a third of the state's share is for highway funding to repair and build new roads. More than $121-million goes to counties for education, public safety and other needs. Nearly $85-million goes to public education and universities.

Fifty-one million dollars go to food and shelter assistance, things such as food stamps and other programs to help the needy. As for taxpayers, 95% of all Americans will receive a tax cut in the form of the "Making Work Pay" credit, amounting to $400 dollars for individuals or $800 dollars per couple.

A one-time payment of $250 for retired and disabled Montanans on Social Security, railroad retirement and Veterans' disability. Also included are; a temporary tax hold on some unemployment benefits and a new tax credit up to $2,500 to help families pay for college.
