De-Icer Bad for Pets

Tools

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - De-icer is a common product used to clear snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways. But if used improperly, it can be harmful to pets and the ground.

Experts say if you own pets, use de-icer without a chloride, which can actually burn pet’s paws. Also avoid using water softener salt pellets. They're too concentrated and ruin concrete. Finally, make sure you're putting a balanced amount of de-icer on the ground.

"Cover it like you were salting a steak. You want to get full coverage of it. You're not going to want a little bit of salt here and a little bit of salt there. You're going to want full coverage so it melts evenly," said Ace Hardware's Rodney Bromgard.

Most de-icers melt ice in less than two hours and work in temperatures below zero. Pet friendly de-icer can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Happy Paws is the safest de-icer for pets. Uses CMA, does not kill plants either.
