Toddler Gets Cast Off

BILLINGS - Christmas came a little early for one Billings family as their toddler got back on his feet Tuesday.

Kaedan Ledbetter, 16-months, is just learning to use his legs again. He was in a body cast for nearly six weeks after a car hit him and his mother in November.

"The car came though oncoming traffic and hit us on the sidewalk," Breanne Ledbetter remembered. "Kaedan flew 25-30 feet." Dr. Richard Lewallen said Kaedan broke his femur, or thigh bone. To stabilize the bone, doctors put Kaedan in a cast that started at his armpits and covered most of his lower body.

"Our life changed," Breanne said. "We had to redo the living room. How we feed him. One of us had to be around him all the time because he couldn't crawl. It's like having a newborn."

Before being put in the cast Kaedan was learning to walk. Minutes after getting the cast off, a walking trial ended in painful screams, but Dr. Lewallen said Kaedan will make a full recovery. "It'll probably take some time before he gets walking again," he said. "He should be back to normal with in 3 months."

Kaedan and his family are looking forward to getting back on their feet, but they're more concerned about giving him his first bath in six weeks. Records show the Ledbetters were hit by a teen who was text messaging while driving.
