Frigid Temps

By Katie Ussin

BILLINGS - Monday was day 2 of below zero temperatures across the Billings area. This past weekend an arctic cold front from Canada put Southeast Montana into a deep freeze.

Not even antifreeze could save one man's pickup from the overnight chill. "It's being a little stubborn. It's just cold," said the man's friend helping with his engine problems. Too cold for recess. Billings public schools cancel recess anytime it is below zero degrees. But mail carriers have no choice but to brave the elements.

"Lots of layers and keep moving and turn the heater up as high as it'll go," said Kurt Schell, U.S. Postal Service, from inside his white mail truck. Monday's high sat at around 11 degrees below zero. Sunday, the Billings area set a record at 18-below. We have not seen these kind of temperatures for this time of year in more than a decade.

"Anything that has to do with heat is going right out the doors," said Rick Boyce, an employee at Lowe's. Boyce said that includes space heaters and stoves. And he reminds people of a couple safety measures.

"Make sure those carbon monoxide testers and smoke detectors are on every level of the house, especially with this cold weather because everything is closed up."

It is the kind of cold that can freeze a moustache, like that of one City of Billings employee as he worked on a pipe, but if you have to go out, make sure you're bundled up.

"If you can protect your earlobes and nose that would be helpful, those are the first things to go, but even some people have gotten frost bite on their corneas of their eyes," said Dr. Brad Fuller, St. Vincent Healthcare, Internal Medicine.
