RED LODGE - Residents of Red Lodge woke up to a winter wonderland Wednesday morning and during this economic recession, several inches of snow translate into more money plowing into the local economy.

Close to a foot of white puffy snow fell around the Red Lodge area Tuesday night and for skiers and snowboarders that turned Wednesday from work day into a snow day.

"Yeah don't tell the boss. We got to get the good runs in when we can," said skier Shea Stanton.

As the snow continued to fall more and more runs continued to open.

"We've already opened 2 runs Wednesday morning. We opened upper royals and lower royals and that brings our count to 15 for the early season," said Red Lodge Mountain's Robert Drake.

"This is great, this is great it's so good for the mountain its great for Red Lodge can't beat it can't beat it at all," said Stanton.

Red Lodge Mountain crews say in years past poor snow and poor turnout has translated into poor early returns, but with almost a new foot of fresh powder, they see sales taking a major lift bringing momentum for the rest of the winter.

"Mid week when there's not too many people skiing on a typical day 10 inches of snow boosts on skier visits," said Drake. "It gives us a lot of optimism for the whole ski season," said Stanton.

More good news for the resort as Red Lodge Mountain officials say the new accumulation also means the upper part of the mountain could open as early as this weekend. Snow guns will continue to run full blast as the temperatures around the mountain stay low.
