Montana Layoffs

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - The Stillwater Mine layoffs represent the largest job losses in Montana this year, but other companies have also made significant cuts.

Since January, Big Sky Airlines, Stimson Lumber, Columbia Falls Aluminum, Plum Creek Lumber, and Semitool have each laid off more than one hundred workers. Stillwater Mining's action means more than 500 miners could lose their jobs by January.

Economists say while Montana still isn't experiencing the full impact of the national economic crisis, the timber and construction industries are taking the biggest hits.

And MT has not been proactive in supporting any of those industries especially mining. The environmentalists will work to insure that SMC's permits do not get renewed should they want to reopen....or some other roadblock.....seems like its a crime to make a decent living in this state. Almost have to be a trustfund baby to live here any more.
