BILLINGS - Montana's higher education leaders are taking a wait-and-see approach in response to Governor Schweitzer's proposed budget.

The Governor's plan would give a 35-million dollar funding increase to the state's colleges and universities. MSU-Billings officials say the budget process has a long way to go, but they hope higher ed will be a priority.

Director of University and Government Relations, Dan Cater says, "While K-12 is important in Billings and Montana, I think that I hope that citizens and legislature and everyone really recognizes that higher ed is really important as well, as an economic driver, education support they build/grow teachers, accountants."

State lawmakers will begin those discussions when they return to Helena in January.
