Budget Plan

By Sarah Gravlee

BILLINGS - Governor Brian Schweitzer released his budget plan this weekend. The proposal would cover the state's expenses through 2011.

The proposal includes $20 million for children's health insurance; an extra $124 million for education, with $88 million going to kindergarten through 12th grades and $35 million to support higher education. He also proposes the state spend $25 million on reducing energy consumption by 20% by the year 2010.

State Representative Kendall Van Dyk, a democrat, said these are all good ideas. "Are we going to take this budget and pass it in its entirety with no change? Absolutely not," he said, "but it's a great start."

Senate Majority Whip Roy Brown said he would have made a very different budget proposal if he was elected governor. "What I would have done is made a budget that is much more in line with how the economy is looking," he said.

The legislature will meet in January to vote on the budget.
