BILLINGS - Deputy Yellowstone County attorney Rod Souza is named Montana's outstanding prosecutor of the year. The distinction recognizes excellence in prosecuting domestic violence cases.

Souza says while he's honored by the award, he's not the only one that deserves recognition. "The folks that really do deserve recognition in these types of situations are those victims of sexual violence particularly domestic violence who are able to stand up and break out of that cycle of violence themselves and protect their family."

Maria Martin, who nominated Souza said, "The case that he prosecuted that I was the victim witness, the incident occurred in March of '05 but we had 10 different trial dates, I can't even tell you how many hearings, until we finally went to court 3 1/2 years later we went through this and Rod was always very respectful, very courteous, very patient with me."

The award is given by Montana Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the attorney generals office and the State Bar of Montana.
