Families Give Back

BILLINGS - Some Billings seniors had a special treat during lunch Saturday, and it didn't have to do with dessert.

As part of National Family Volunteer Day, kids and parents get together to give to others. Montana State University Billings teamed up with members of the Billings community to show that a little effort can go a long way.

Roughly thirty kids, parents and students decorated placemats and made goody-bags Saturday morning. Then hand delivered them to seniors to kick of the season of giving. Residents at the retirement center say not only was it great to see the kids, but it was also nice to see the parents teaching family values.

"I think it teaches them value, nowadays there aren't enough values taught at home, but this really is good, we need more of this," Leola VanAtta, a resident at Sage Tower.

"We all came together and each of us only made a few bags but together we made 60 of them, and we also decorated a lot of placemats. So when everybody does their own part we can make something big," says Megan Jung with a student volunteer at MSU-B.

Megan Jung says Family Volunteer Day is a great way to get kids involved with volunteering at an early age, and let them know that volunteering isn't only for adults.
