A Day at NILE

By Gillette Vaira

BILLINGS - There are about 1,700 fourth graders at the Metra this week for NILE, and they're learning about agriculture and how it affects their daily lives.

"We just find great value in agriculture in our area, what it brings for our economy," said Lori Kraft, a NILE presenter. Students from schools in Billings and the surrounding areas attended sessions taught by area farm and ranch experts.

Sam Cline, a Beartooth Elementary Student, said he learned "About how we use livestock and beef and for everything almost. Seventy-five percent, they said, is used with corn in a store, corn syrup, or corn starch."

At "AG in the Classroom," young people discovered that their food doesn't just come straight from the grocery store. Roni Baker, the Yellowstone County 4-H Extension Agent, said, "Well we talk a lot about like, 'Where does milk come from? Does it come from a beef cow or a dairy cow and then what other things do we get from them?'"

Students even got the buzz about smaller creatures. When asked about the bees they saw, Gabby Hurtt from Beartooth Elementary said, "They make a lot of stuff!" The folks at the NILE say that students can get a better understanding of their environments.

"I just think it's an outstanding program to bring all these kids in to see, you know, what agriculture is truly about," Kraft said. The learning will continue next year with a new group of fourth grade students, as "AG in the Classroom" is an annual event.
