Yellowstone Snowmobile Plan

BILLINGS - Wyoming lawmakers ask the Interior Department to enact a temporary plan allowing snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park this winter.

Senators Mike Enzi, and John Barrasso and representative Barbara Cubin are asking for an emergency ruling allowing snowmobiles access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks as well as the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway.

Two weeks ago a federal judge scrapped a plan allowing 540 snowmobiles and 83 snowcoaches in Yellowstone each day. Without an emergency ruling, officials say neither snowmobiles or snowcoaches will be allowed in the parks this winter.

Why deny those people who can't ski the 30 miles the right to experience the same thing of those who can. So much for the park inscription on the north gate arch "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated in 1904. Sorry Teddy, we can no longer abide by this motto.

Lila, I don't think many people can ski the 30 miles each way to Old Faithful and back and see all the beauty in between. The snowmobiles allowed in the park only run on some of the same roads that over ten thousand automobiles daily travel on. The snowmobiles also must meet noise and emissions standards so only the automotive engine snowmobiles are even allowed in the park. It is unfortunate that politics plays into the running of Yellowstone as it can be done without harming the environment

Yellowstone is so nice and quiet during winter months and early spring, why let the noisey snowmachines break this silence? Skiing should be allowed, and snowshoes as snow gets a bit deep at times.
