Domestic Abuse

By Stephanie Domurat

BILLINGS - It is estimated that eight people in Montana die every year from domestic violence. Nationwide, one of three women is a victim of abuse.

The Billings Family Violence Task Force held its annual conference Thursday to address that issue. Officials focused on prevention and teaching kids about healthy relationships at an early age. One speaker was a victim of abuse for five years and says it's important to listen to your instincts and get help if you have trouble leaving.

"A lot of abusers do the same thing, they make you feel guilty and crazy. I was thinking, why am I instigating this? and I was embarrassed to tell anyone, I think that's why a lot of reports don't happen, because you feel embarrassed, but it's not your fault and that's why I really wanted to tell my story," says Barbara Bessette.

Experts say, on average, it takes women seven attempts before they successfully leave an abusive relationship. They say mothers are more likely to leave once children are involved.

Please send information to Lame Deer Community... a 6 year old child was recently murdered by her father and there still has not been any community activity,, not even a memorial/awareness walk This should be top priority.
