Lockwood Asphalt Spill Cleanup

LOCKWOOD - A crew spent Monday morning cleaning an area in Lockwood where more than 6,000 gallons of hot asphalt spilled creating a headache for drivers and nearly flowing into the Yellowstone River Sunday.

Fire officials say a tanker truck lost control on a corner and spilled asphalt into a drainage ditch next to the town pump in Lockwood. Crews contained the spill before it was able to flow into the Yellowstone River. They hope the weather will cooperate during cleanup.

"The good thing with this is it doesn't saturate the ground real bad. The downside is if it does rain you'll have oil residue that's why the tarp and booms are in place, to catch any residue that might run off," said cleanup crew member Spence Hanser.

Crews say it should take around a week to remove all of the spilled asphalt but there is no danger to the community.
