Possibilities for Hardin Jail

BILLINGS - The Montana Department of Corrections said the Two Rivers Detention Facility in Hardin could yet play a role for the state.

Mike Ferriter, director, said the state has no need for secure beds in Hardin, but could use the jail to house sexual offenders, parole violators or other low security prisoners.

Officials with the Hardin jail said they are interested in both options, especially the latter. The jail would be used for a Revocation Facility. "This particular group of offenders were in the community and may go to prison or more than likely will go back to the community," said Ferriter. "So, it's been a very successful program for us and it would be a good opportunity for Hardin."

The two options from the state would total a little more than 200 people. The new 464-bed facility in Hardin has sat empty for more than a year. Officials with the Hardin jail said they are also in talks with California to house prisoners, and still pursuing a contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
