Snowmobiles in Yellowstone

BILLINGS - The National Park Service's plan for allowing snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park this winter was shot down on Monday, and the Montana Snowmobile Association is not happy.

A federal judge threw out plans to allow more than 500 snowmobiles in per day during the winter. The judge says the park service's decision to license more snowmobiles per day is "contrary to law" and the park service hasn't explained why its plan is necessary.

A member of the board of directors for the Montana Snowmobile Association thinks the decision is frustrating and an example of "governing from the bench." "This decision, if you didn't allow snowmobiling it would kill west Yellowstone, kill Cody. A lot of people enjoy snowmobiling in the park in the winter time. We're staying on the road, we're only talking about one road." says Ed Melcher with the Montana Snowmobile Association.

Environmentalists and park advocates say for the last three winters, nearly 250 snowmobiles per day used the park's trails. Melcher says it could take a few days to figure out what the ruling means for the Montana Snowmobile Association.
