Big Game Season

By Sarah Gravlee

BILLINGS - As fall sets in, so does hunting season. Saturday marked the opening of big game archery season. Bow hunters in Montana can now take a shot at that trophy bull elk or buck deer.

Officials with Montana's Fish Wildlife and Parks said most hunting districts in Montana have more elk than they can hold. Unfortunately for hunters officials said the elk have learned to hang out on private land where hunters can't get to them.

Last year hunters harvested more than 27,000 elk in Montana during hunting season. About 2,700 of those were taken with a bow. More than 134,000 deer were killed in hunting season in the treasure state last year. About 7,200 of those were killed by bow hunters. Officials said they expect to see similar harvests this year.
