BILLINGS - Every sixteen minutes in the United States, someone dies from suicide. And every single minute someone attempts it.

A conference at Riverstone Health highlighted that issue leading up to National Suicide Prevention Week. Montana has the highest rate of suicides in the nation. It's the second leading cause of death for young Montanans.

Yellowstone County has formed a coalition of organizations and survivors, to prevent suicide, and let people know it is preventable. "You don't have to be a pastor or a counselor, or therapist. Anyone can do it. If someone comes up to you and talks about suicide, just talk to them about. Ask them about their issue and ask them what's wrong. Take them seriously and just say, let's discuss this more," says Mike Yakawich, Chairman of Yellowstone Valley Suicide Prevention.

The fifth annual "Out of the Darkness Walk” will be on September 21st, to raise money and awareness for the cause.
