Accidental Shooting

By Nick Lough

LAUREL - Officers in Laurel are calling it an accident after an early morning shooting Wednesday claims the life of a local teenager. Authorities say the young man's death could have been prevented.

A shots fired call came in around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and by the time police arrived on scene a 19-year-old Laurel teen was dead. Police say the victim was shot in the torso as he and a 24-year-old friend were handling several guns they thought were unloaded. Investigators interviewed the 24 year old and then released him.

Police say it was accidental and no charges have been filed. Laurel Police Chief Rick Musson says it's a lesson to everyone concerning gun safety. "Be careful whenever you handle a handgun or a rifle or shotgun and make sure its unloaded and not to point guns at anyone," said Musson.

Laurel Police are still investigating the incident with assistance from the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Department. At least four other people were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Jake dated my daughter for over 1 1/2 years now. He was an awesome young man who worked hard, and I agree with Chandra he was the "Heart" of the Haun family. He has worked hard from such a young age to help provide for his family. Jake truly loved my daughter as much as she loved him. Rest in peace Jake, we love you and will miss you dearly!
