Grain Harvest

By Nichole Szemerei

NEAR ACTON - Local wheat crops are running a bit behind schedule but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Farmer Dan Downs says although his wheat crop should've been completely cut two to three weeks ago, production is at least average.

With the price of wheat at a high of about $8.58 a bushel, Downs says he can't complain about this farming season. "By golly it's looking pretty darn good. It may not be the best crop we've ever cut but it's right up there. We're excited about the price of course, that always helps when you get a good price for the work you do. Yeah it's looking pretty good."

Downs also says that although the price of wheat is up, costs like fertilizer, gas and combines have gone up for farmers, so the net pay averages out. Downs expects his crops to be fully cut within the next 10 days.
