First Day

By Sarah Gravlee

BILLINGS - Summer ended Tuesday for most kids in the Billings area and there's nothing quite like the first first day of school. As the fist bell rang at Boulder Elementary, scores of new kindergarteners marched off to class.

Principal Jay Lemelin said there are even more youngsters than they're used to. "With the closure of Rimrock Elementary we have 5 kindergarten classes," he said. "They're all about 23 students, so we've got 115 kindergarten students."

While the first day can be emotional for some, Erica Capser said she and her son are ready. "I'm excited," he said. "He's ready to go and I'm excited. It's the next step." With a new chore chart in place at home, Erica's son Camden is in charge of packing his own lunches.

"I packed 4 Oreos, some shredded cheese, some milk and some ham," Camden explained. Camden is in Mrs. Bravo's class this year and he and his mother have heard good things about her. After a long walk down the hall, Camden and his classmates reached their new home away from home and started their careers as students.

Mrs. Bravo started the morning with a cheer song: "Pick up, Pick up. Put all those books away. Pick up. Pick up. It's time to start our day." Just 179 days till summer.
