Alternative Energy

By Stephanie Domurat

BILLINGS - Nationally, the price of fuel is as much as $4 dollars a gallon, which leads many of us to look for alternate ways to get around. The Good Earth Market downtown hosted a car show Saturday morning, but it wasn't about making a sell.

Instead, it was an opportunity for electric-car owners, to share their prized possessions. Rick Jones has one of the few fully electric vehicles in Billings, and says he's proud. "It's my baby, most people my age, they have a midlife crisis with a sports car, well mine is an anti sports car," says Jones, owner of a ZENN car.

His ZENN, stands for Zero Emission No Noise. After having it for more than a year, he feels it was well worth the roughly $10,000 dollars he spent. "How many electric blue cars are there in Billings? Only 1! And I kind of like that, people like it and ask me about it and I love that." says Jones.

He isn't the only one joining the electric car ride. Though no mainstream car manufacturers offer the fully electric ride, some independent smaller companies have versions hitting the market.

Miles Electric Vehicles in Bozeman offers what they call neighborhood electric vehicles. "These vehicles are designed for errand running, going to work, to the library, things that don't require you to drive over 25-or-35 mph. Which turns out to be 90% of the driving we do," says Ron Gompertz, with Miles Electric Vehicles company.

Though you may compromise luxury or size owners say you make up for it in economic reasons. The electric vehicle costs roughly 1 cent to travel a mile, compared with gas fueled cars that cost an average of 20-to-30 cents per mile.

Owners argue that not only do their wallets get a break but in time, so will the environment. "I wanted to do what I could to reduce my impact on the environment." says Jones. And though some argue the increased electricity cost would contribute to pollution, supporters say its still a much better option than fuel emission.

The electric cars are not limited to 35 miles per hour. Owners say they use their alternate gas powered vehicles for longer trips. The manager of Good Earth Market says he will soon be installing an electrical charging station for cars.
