HELENA - The state health department says a Richland County woman has been diagnosed with Montana's first case of West Nile virus this year.

The Department of Public Health and Human Services says the woman is believed to have acquired the infection in eastern Montana, had a mild form of the illness and was expected to make a full recovery.

Most people who become infected with the mosquito-borne disease have no symptoms, while some develop West Nile fever, which may last for three to six days. Fewer than one out of 150 may develop West Nile encephalitis or West Nile meningitis, which causes headache, rash, high fever, mental confusion, muscle weakness, tremors, convulsions, coma and paralysis.

In 2007, there were 202 cases of West Nile virus and five deaths reported in Montana.
