Child Protection Conference

By Stephanie Domurat

BILLINGS - It's estimated that nearly 28,000 American Indian children are at risk of abuse or neglect each year. And at a national conference in Billings on Wednesday, leaders addressed the importance of Indian child safety and welfare.

More than 1,000 people from a variety of tribal and governmental agencies are meeting this week to focus on child welfare and protection on reservations. Officials with the U.S. Department of Justice also visited the Crow Reservation to get a better understanding of how to use federal grants.

"What types of programs are needed, what type of regulations are attached that may make them less successful, and what types of practices we should alter for the best impact to Tribal countries," says Jeffrey Sedgwick with the U.S. Department of Justice.

"We wanted to bring everyone together so that were working jointly with each other to prevent abuse and neglect and some of the other issues we deal with in Indian Country," says Gloria Mora with Indian Services. This is the first year this many governmental agencies have come together to address the issue of child safety on reservations.
