Hotel Tax

By KULR Staff

BILLINGS - A new variety of amateur athletic events could be coming to Billings.

It's part of the work underway by the Tourism Business Improvement District, which formed last October with a new hotel tax. Board members say they've attended national trade shows promoting and securing contracts for major conventions and sporting events in Billings. A recent deal is with Star Touring and Riding Association for a show at Metra Park in July of 2009.

The group says the whole city can see benefit from boosting tourism. "They're going to eat in the restaurants, they're going to buy gasoline, they'll shop. Everyone is going to realize the benefits of that. Even if it's the waitress at the restaurant because her tips are going to increase." says Shelly Mann, the chair of the TBID board.

The TBID is the first of its kind in the state. Its outreach work is funded through the 75 cents per night hotel-motel assessment implemented last year. The tax brings in about $355,000 dollars a year.
