School Bonds

By Madelyn Jarrett

BILLINGS - It looks like it could be a year until Billings School Board asks voters for the bonds to refurbish schools and build a new one.

School board trustees voted to wait until next November to potentially ask voters for $30-$35 million dollars in bonds. The money, which would be paid in part by the state, would fund improvements at McKinley, Broadwater and some high schools.

A separate bond would pay for a new school on the west-end. Chair of the board Kathy Kelker says they don't feel timing is right to ask voters for money right now. "We are aware of some concerns with the current economy. We think it's wise to wait until that settles out so we're not fighting that as an issue."

The board voted to allow administration start contracts with the architects, CTA and JGA, for those projects. At the meeting Rocky Mountain College president proposed buying the Rimrock school site from the district; a proposal Kelker says she's excited about.
