Bibles Confiscated

By Sarah Gravlee

BILLINGS - A religious group based in Sheridan, Wyoming, had 300 bibles confiscated by customs officials in China Sunday.

Patrick Klein, the founder of Vision Beyond Borders, said they planned to give the Bibles to Chinese pastors. Customs officials took the bibles based on a law banning people from bringing more than one piece of religious material into the country.

Klein said he and three others stayed at the airport for 26 hours trying to get the bibles back. "We brought Bibles in because that's what we do as Christians. We want to help our brothers and sisters," he said. "In China it's bringing Bibles in; to Laos it's bringing seed and clothes and medication. Whatever they need we just want to help them out."

Klein said the experience gave him a greater appreciation for the religious freedom in the United States. The group is still waiting and hoping customs officials will return the bibles. They are planning to travel to Laos, Nepal and Myanmar.
